WHAT DO I THINK I KNOW NOW?

A Poem About Nursing

I am your nurse

Today and tomorrow

From beginning to end

Of our caring relationship

To support and guide you

Through all of your needs

To fulfill your journey

This is a beautiful poem that explores the core values of nursing one by one.  It highlights the physical needs that most believe is the core of nursing, but continues on to explore the spiritual and emotional side of nursing that we know as nurses.  In this profession, caring is a core concept that is necessary for the relationship to become nurturing and we do what is best for the patient (Karlsson et al., 2020).  I believe that a relationship between nurse and patient is lateral, where we learn and teach one another.  Karlsson et al., (2020) state that caring in nursing is a relation that is understood to be essential and requires two people.  I would agree with this statement.  However, this article continues on to state that this relation is also based upon where one takes care of another that is suffering.  I do believe this to be true, because not all caring relationships require someone to be suffering.  Nursing has evolved to a time where patients can either be sick or healthy, and we are present to help them on their journey.
